Hi everyone!! Everything is going swimmingly up here in Atlanta, I'm definitely enjoying cooler weather (its going to be in the 60's in the mornings next week :) !!

Thought I'd share some stuff...
We had a bake sale at work to benefit Light the Night I opted to make some yummy banana chocolate chip muffins!! Course I had to package them in a cute little way...

Also, my sister wanted a drawing of our dogs done, in her words, "that style thing you do on the computer"
so here it be, at Carter's everything is wearing a sweater/hat or scarf... so I guess it rubbed off.... animals just look cuter all dressed up :P

This didn't take long, maybe 30 minutes, but it made me really miss my puppies :(

Last month I moved to Atlanta to take up an intern position with Carter's... it's been quite the adventure moving for the first time, living in a big city and working for a major company. These 3 images were really quick and fun to do! Our assignment was to re-do a 2 page spread and and spot illustration for an existing book. I chose an alphabet book so I could draw some Carter's-esque type cuteness!! The ladybug and Koi is the 2 pg spread, but I chose to upload them separately, since that's how they will appear in my portfolio. These were so much fun!

What a week!! Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights we had the Hallmark workshop and wow was is AWESOME! We did so many cool things and learned lots of stuff (and lots of stuff about ourselves)!! The over-arching assignment was we chose some copy and made a card for it. My copy happened to be in the "green" line of cards...plus it's cute. The link heart on the cover is actually a die-cut, and the pink is what's on the inside. Totally exhausting week, but worth it.

Last first day

Seems so weird tomorrow (Monday) will be my last first day of school EVER. Crazy.

Here's a snippet of my first finished thesis illustration!! The reason I'm not posting the whole thing is because I would like people to see a whole body of work at our senior show in May. Don't worry, I'll post the finals on here after the show :)

Here's what my thesis actually is. I love children's books and specially old, classic children's poems and nursery rhythms. I've always wanted to illustrate some of my all time favorites... so this is my chance. I've chosen about 9 poems, mostly from books my Grandmother and Mom read to me from. A lot of these poems I can still hear my grandmother read to me, so they all have a special place in my heart. I think my grandmother had the most enthusiasm concerning me becoming an artist, she's had quite the influence on me!

Sorry it's been such a long time.... with good reason though. For those not in the Ringling bubble, senior illustration majors are required to create a senior thesis and on May 1st, we have a big show and it's all exciting. So I'm working on my thesis, I'll post snippets of what I'm doing, but not actually the whole piece because I want people to see fresh work when they come to the show :)

When I post a snippet, I'll explain what I'm doing...

In other news, my BEACH TOWELS are finally out at Bealls. For those who don't know, I interned over the summer in their design studio working on product development. I did lots and lots of towels and a good chunk of them will be out (some now) and in Feb, march and april...I also did old lady t-shirts, flip flops and some melamine dishes, I'll post those when they come out.

I'm trudging along on the food piece...

image number one (top)- some more food was added, plus a bit of texture.

image number 2 (middle)- is me being annoyed with black and white (because it's hard for me for some reason) and I put it in color to help me see it. Yes, I know, I'm backwards, but that's ok, color is my good ol friend.

image number 3 (bottom)- is the color version in grayscale via photoshop. I'd like to add the texture from the top image to this one whenever I get an approval of my composition.

Wow, it's been quite some time since I posted!! With a good reason, I promise. It just got to the point that I was working so hard at work (and out of it, but still working on our intern project) that doing my personal art took a backseat. I think I burned out twice, something I have never done before, but I learned how to deal with it and get myself back together. Most of it had to do with having Mike help me through it. Thanks hun! So I finished up on Friday, it was bittersweet. The sweet part being not having to get up at 6 AM monday morning... the bitter part not working as a professional/getting paid/ and working with really fabulous people. The design studio at Bealls IS AMAZING, they do so much and they are all really talented people. I guess I am more sad than happy, but hopefully (and if the economy doesn't take a totally crap) I will have a spot up there when I graduate... I will be doing freelance for them during the year and Jan (boss lady) wanted me to be an "on call" artist, meaning, whenever they needed me I would come up and work like normal. I turned that down because of the craziness that is senior year. But it's ok, she knows about ringling and all that.

In the end I ended up doing at least 45 beach towels, I know about 20-25 of them that are booked, and about another 9 that probably will be, but I ran out of time and didn't get to send them over- seas myself. I also did these nifty flip flops, wedge sandles, dinner ware, missy tee's and such. I learned A LOT about the business of art and this whole retail world, which is quite fascinating. The intern project ( bascially a re-branding of the juniors and young men private brand) went really well. The presentation was NERVE RACKING! But we did a really great job and it rocked. I had a good team of interns to work with. yay!

I can't believe all the art I produced. I'm going to bring my binder of work to ringling to show a few teachers what bealls is all about so they can help steer future students who want to get into fashion/reatail/ pattern design.

Oi, I can't even sum up all of my 12 weeks there and I have mixed emotions about going back to school. I have no idea what sorta style I want to do, because I worked so differently at bealls. So I'm at a loss on that and I just feel different. I can't explain it. Weird. Hopefully when I see some more familiar faces again (*cough... matt) I'll be able to figure it out.

Anyhoo, here's a pic of about half the design team (plus mike, matt's wife, and Jan's son). we went bowling right after work to celebrate my 12 weeks with them. It was a lot of fun, and I will miss them!! We are a little weird, but you have to be to be in this business. :)

yea... I had a super busy week this week and I started this about 2 hours ago...and yea. It's ok. I figured I could throw in my schematic thing because um, it looks technical like communication. Anyhoo, I have this intern project thing for work, but I have to work on it at home because I'm too busy at work to work on it. UGH. Yea, I totally don't want to deal with it on my time. But oh well. . I saw my first towel design on an actual beach towel, super exciting!! Ok, enough personal stories. I like the peacock. He amuses me. And yes, he is wearing a monocle.

I did this one as a nod to what I'm doing this weekend. Being completely in summer mode.... spending my 3 days at the pool, eating stuff, wearing bright clothes, and all that stuff. Totally having a bbq tonight. :) The taste part is of course, the ice cream. This is my absolute favorite thing to eat... a chocolate-vanilla swirl soft-serve ice cream cone. After I finished this piece I realized it's much like my 20's flapper chicks.... btw, she's not supposed to be me, but if I lost like 40 lbs and had longer hair....why not? Haha.

Here's a smattering of stuff I've been working on. The top image is my finished spread for children's book. The middle image is the beginnings of the final cover for the book and the bottom image is another spread in the book. We have an open assignment in illustration so I'm doing another spread...I honestly just wanted to paint the luggage. It's happy. I just blocked in all the local colors and stuff, I haven't jumped into lighting or atmospheric stuff yet..

I feel like my children's book is being neglected on my blog so... here we go. Today I started the final art work for it, if its confusing I posted the line drawing with text at the bottom. Basically I blocked everything in today.

The owl (Edwin) who's playing hop scotch is the most hammered out in the rendering/color sense. I enjoy the blue in the grass but I think it's a bit strong at the moment. Most of these colors are my "undercolors" ...kinda like underwear, I just build on top of them. :P As always, with any piece, comments,criticism and hellos are most welcome.

hallmark workshop

So the workshop is done and over with.... I guess now I have to work on everything I've been putting off for the past 3 days. Oi. Anyways, the workshop was an amazing experience. We critiqued everyones ideas for the first to days, then yesterday we set to work. The assignment was to concept three different ideas for celebrating or sharing a special occasion. The one i went with was something I would give Mike after we got engaged. It would be a set of three books. One a cookbook (all handmade by me) with some recipes, room to write the experience of the recipe and then space for new recipes we use, find or create together. The second book would be a spice book,containing the most common used spices, what to do with them, shelf life and some fun facts and history. The third book will be about herbs and along the same lines as the spice book. Also I will give him the actual spices in magnetic tins that go on metal bars for the kitchen. On the back of the tins I will make labels for a quick reference for that spice, what dishes to put it in and all that...

so it's been a good day today! I got an interview with the Beall's design group for a summer internship...totally exciting. For those who don't know what Bealls is, its the'florida store' they do lots of children's stuff, so thats pretty neat.

I got into the Hallmark creative workshop here at Ringling... totally cool as well!! It's nice cause they come for the workshop on the 13th, 14th and 15th of march then they come on monday the 17th to interview for an internship there.... pretty sweeeeet. so yea im stoked.

I keep forgetting about posting stuff I'm doing in my children's book class... So I wrote a story, which I think I mentioned several posts back, did the story boards and now I'm working on the dummy. After I finish that, I need to do a few final, fully colored pages. The jist of the story is : Two little owls are best buddies, they play together all the time and it's all happy. Then one of the owls (Edwin) has to move to another forest far away. Erni is sad and depressed (several emo pages here :P ) His mom then tells erni they should be pen pals, he asks what that is, she explains then he fly to his friend's house right before he leaves and he gives him his address. Erni waits and waits then finally a letter comes. At the this point in the book there will be a physical letter that the reader opens thats attached to the book. He's all excited and writes back...yay. Here are the storyboards...

This is the next thing I am doing for Perez. I created this guy who is a crab fisherman guy (like on deadliest catch). When he's not on the crab boat he bakes delicious items.... cakes, pies, cookies..... he really enjoys wedding cakes and decorating them. I think with this character I wanted to try making a big guy cute....he has tiny little hands (pinky up!) and little legs and feet. If I remember, I'll scan my oodles of sketches of him. It's always good to explore one's character to the max even if his whole body won't be in the final piece. At least now I a fully developed character for future endeavors.

Sorry about the lack of posts... um, here's the finished joan of arc, on a beach, in 1920 piece for illustration. Uh, I'm not wild about it, I need to knock back the intensity of the color on the pink, green and purple bathing suits. I'm glad it's over with. Ha.

theres a layer of watercolor, another of pencil and another of ink....nice thing is they are all separate from each other and brought together digitally. Next I will go into it with some digital paint! mmmm its a good time.

Our next illustration assignment was to pick a little piece of paper out of three envelopes titled : time, enviorment and person.

I drew out Joan of Arc, 1920, on the beach. Now we have to create an image showing the enviorment, the time period and the person.... oh what fun!! Haha. I really like this aqssignment, it's a good time. Here's a sampling of the rough sketch, value/lighting studies and color studies!!

I had a chat with Brandes about my portfolio and about american greetings and he said I needed brighter, cleaner colors. He really loved this other 20's girl I did awhile back and asked if I had anymore. I had another sketch, so I finished it yesterday. I like using this technique because it's extremely quick. From now on, I'm supposed to think "sherbet" :P

Erni and Edwin

Oh Erni and Edwin... these little owls are for my children's book illustration class. We get the choice of writing a book and illustrating it or choosing and existing one and re-doing the layout and illustrations. I choose to write my own and did so in about 3 days... since we only had a week to write it. Over the course of the semester we will be story boarding (ha, I'm already done with that part!) then I'll put it together in a dummy and have 2 illustrations plus the cover in full color! I think I will end up doing more finished pages because we have this class for 6 hours on wednesdays....oi..so I get a lot of work done since I'm not being interrupted. The story is a bit long but maybe one day I'll post it, in summary it's about to little owls who are the bestest friends in the whole wide world but one has to move away, they figure out they can be pen pals and all is happy and well. At the end of the story, Erni receives his first pen pal letter and I actually want to have a letter you physical open that attached to the page. Kinda folded in 3 ways... pretty sweet.

One of the classes I have this semester is an Indepent Study with my computer illustration teacher Octavio Perez. Idep. studies are awesome because I get to pick to chose what I'm studying, my assignments and how frequently we meet. I chose Children's Charater development because I felt that was my weakest area... facial expressions and just designing somehting that would fit well in that market. Since I would love to do children's books or work at Hallmark/american greetings I feel this will really help me... and since Perez worked at hallmark he can help me with my portfolio! :P He's been workin me hard but I really love it.

For my first assignment I had to write a descripton of my character... Archibald then figure out what he looked like.. I kinda deviated from cute to something..uh.. eccentric. I have pages and pages of sketches for him but I only put a few on this little page and the color one is justa quick local color study. Here's his description:

Archibald Ore loved unusual shoes. His favorites were shoes with buckles and bells. He liked ones with big buttons and oversized tongues. He had a vast collection in every color. If he had to pick a favorite color it would be a happy mix between magenta and purple, Purmenta he called it. One would think Archibald would have some outlandish clothes to go with his shoes, but this is not the case. Archibald wears plain clothing of the Victorian period but he loves this particularly purple coat. Archibald has a pet that follows him everywhere. This little bird is called Iota. Archibald in his spare time (which is all the time, since he is unemployed) likes to read instruction manuals for complex machinery and he likes books about electrical circuits and wiring. He tries many odd jobs but none seem to like it when he wears his peculiar shoes to work.

Um, so here it is for crit tomorrow. The scan is a tad on the warm side.... I like it, My illustration teacher (Patrick Fiore) says I'm really close to nailing my "style" ... I really like using the black lines as a rhythm line and letting the color help define the shape of the object/character. Oi. American Greetings comes on Feb 5 to pick people for internships.... EEEEEEEK!!!!

the little color studies were done with watercolor and a micron. I really like using watercolor paper now instead of wc board. I can get some nice texture happening and I like the way the color looks on the paper. The wc board seemed to grey out my colors. Weird.

Here's a quick pile up of sketches for illustration class. We are doing character development and this Obi...who I based off my real dog...Obi. Haha. I still need to do Pip, his buddy... Thursday the turnaround and model sheets are due then the following week a final illustration with the character (in my case both characters) in their environment. We also had to write a story to go with our characters. I think I said all of this backwards because we had to write the story before we drew anything.

Still life assignment for computer illustration. We got to learn painter 10! Yay! It definitely beats oil painting in the not messy department. 6 hours I think. Below it is the original photo ref. Everyone seems to like the photo...maybe I should switch to PDI major.... :P The top one is my re-do after crit!

More computer illustration excitement! For this assignment we got to choose a book of our choice and re-design the cover using collage. All sorts of textures in here. The backgrounds I made with ink and roller, scanned them in and used channels to fill in the color. The cat is just layers of different colored textures erased out... and the boots are just rendered in photoshop. The text was a good time... I hand did it, scanned then took it into illustrator (used the pen tool) then imported to photoshop and messed with it there. So here it stands before crit tomorrow......

2nd Illustration assignment. We had to create a recruitment poster for a job...I chose to do a wedding dress designer and I went with more of concept approach, hence the dress maker's form and the floating flowers! The watercolor background was nerve-racking. It was done with ONE wash....the pink with yellow dropped in on the edges then everything was spread around using the don brandes method of tilting the board till its all soaked in. This was the largest surface I have ever done that on! I can't remember the actuall dimensions, but somewhere a little shy of 18 X24. The dressform was brought up using white gouache and the flowers were acylic and watercolor.

I enjoyed this project greatly! It was for computer illustration class and we had to come up with our own character and put all our process work on sketchbook pages..and make it look believable! I don't really have a sketchbook with leaf paper in it...but I wish I did! These are my little bird characters....I came up with this idea when I was little and I always wondered what birds did on telephone wires. I think they chat and drink coffee.... so here they are in all their cuteness.

the little bird makes me happy, it only took me about three hours from thinking of it to finish....actually, come to think of it, I don't think its done, but I'm pleased where it is now. The other one I just needed to get out of my system....the backgroud is the best thing about it. :P Maybe I was feeling angst-y that day....

I am trying to understand/get better at photoshop. Since I am in charge of Keating 6 during open lab for the precollege kids, I have hours of free time to mess around on the computer. I wish there was corel painter in here....so I just have to work with photoshop. I'll try and finish them next week. I think there's about 5 hours so far on them...give or take a bit.
